What is a nightmare?
A disturbing
dream which is related to negative feelings, such as anxiety, stress, or any
fear that wakens you is known as a nightmare. Nightmares occur at any age but
commonly occur in children. Nightmares are normal so don’t get worried about
them. According to research girls have more nightmares than boys.
Nightmares
are commonly found but nightmare disorders are rare. Nightmare disorders caused
distress, and disturbance in your sleep, you will be afraid of going to the bed and
sometimes it disturbs you for the whole day. Nightmares mostly appear in
the second half of the night. These dreams raised fears in you just because of them
you are awake at the midnight, and going to sleep again can be difficult.

Nightmares:
- Can be possible to feel sweaty and have a rapid heartbeat in the bed after a nightmare.
- Having these for a while fear, anger, anxiety, sad.
- It awakens you after a nightmare.
Nightmare disorders:
Following are the nightmare disorders:
- Thinking all day about your nightmare. It mentally upsets you. And you can’t stop yourself from thinking about images from your dream.
- Will be afraid to go to the bed again because having a fear of another upcoming nightmare.
- Can be caused by fatigue and laziness and low energy.
- Behavior problems related to bedtime.
Causes of nightmare disorder:
The causes for nightmare disorders:
- It can be caused due to stress and anxiety. Minor nightmares may be caused due to stress such as problems at home or school. The major ones such as the death of someone, someone suddenly leaves you all these types of problems trigger nightmares. Experiencing anxiety due to some of these type of fears become a reason for nightmares.
- May be due to the trauma. Mostly Nightmares caused after the accident, physical or sexual injury, or any other serious event or trauma but mostly found in PSTD.
- Medication can be another prominent reason for nightmares. e.g Drugs are used to treat Parkinson’s disease or to help smoking can easily trigger nightmares.
- Taking too much alcohol can also be a cause of nightmares.
- May be caused due to any mental or physical disorder such as cancer, heart disease, and any sleep disorder.
- Some people who read scary books, novels, fiction, and watch horror movies before going to bed can be caused nightmares.
Treatments:
- Treatment for nightmares is not necessary. But if you are experiencing anxiety and stress for a long time due to it. Then there are some treatments mentioned here that can prove helpful for you.
- Should start proper medical treatment. If your nightmares caused due to any medical problem.
- Should take stress or anxiety treatment. May your doctor suggest some stress-reduction techniques, counseling, or therapy which are proves helpful against nightmares.
- Can use medication against it. Commonly medication is rarely used for nightmares. But mostly is used against severe nightmares associated with PTSD.
- Imagery rehearsal therapy is one of its treatments. It is mostly used for that type of person who has nightmares as a result of PSTD. This treatment may decrease the frequency of nightmares.
