What are Freckles?

Freckles are not a serious problem related to health. Freckles are actually pigmented cells that contain color. These pigmented cells appear on the surface of the skin in the form of small batches. Freckles are mostly occurred in children in their childhood due to sun exposure. These can fade and less noticeable as they grow. Freckles occur due to Ultraviolet radiation. There are two categories of freckles Ephelides and Solar lentigines. Ephelides it is the common type as people know about freckles. On the other hand, Solar lentigines occur during adulthood which includes freckles, aging spots, and sunspots.

What are the Causes of Freckles?

There are many causes of Freckles.

  • Freckles are mostly caused due to Ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
  • The cause of the occurrence of Freckles is sun exposure. It makes them darker. It can appear on the face, chest, arms, and neck.
  • May occur due to genetics.
  • It mostly occurs in summer and it can fade during winter.
  • Can be caused due to extra production of melanin.
  •  

What are the Symptoms of Freckles?

There are the following symptoms of freckles.

  • It can appear on the surface of the skin in the form of brown spots.
  • It can feel the smooth texture with no bumps on the patch

What are Preventions of Freckle?

The skin should be protected from the sun, with the help of sun protection products. But these products can’t disappear freckles but can stop the forming of new freckles.  There are some ways which can be helpful in preventing it.

  • The face should be covered with a hat and sunglasses and should wear long sleeves and long pants.
  • More careful about the timing of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Because it is the time of strong sunlight.
  • If going out, must lock the skin with sunblock. It is necessary the reapply sunscreen after every two hours if having a sweat.
  • Should be avoided from tanning beds.

 

What are the treatments for Freckles?

There are many treatments mentioned here. Normally, freckles are not harmful and dangerous but it makes the skin sensitive to sunlight. Therefore skin needs some specific care and sun protective products.

  • According to research in 2012 trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and phenol are useful helpful in lightening the appearance of freckles. Such as topical and spot peel these type of products are containing (TCA) and phenol. In that condition, there are some other compounds that can disappear the freckles. e.g alpha hydroxy acid, azelaic acid, cysteamine acid, vitamin C, and retinoids.
  • Laser Therapy can be helpful for it to get rid of it. It is focused with intense light to target the flawed area of the skin.  According to a study in 2015, the 1064 Q-switched Nd YAG laser is found most effective treatment for freckles. Generally, this treatment is safe but there are some side effects that can occur. Such as itching, swelling, redness, peeling, infection, and changes in skin color.
  • Chemical peels can disappear. It contains a chemical solution  to target the  flawed area. With the help of glycolic acid and trichloroacetic acid damaged skin is removed and the new skin is brought out. Some side effects can occur temporarily. Such as redness, irritation, swelling, crusting, peeling, etc.
There are some home remedies which can be helpful for it.
  • Lemon contains vitamin C which helps to lighten the dark spots.  Take a small amount of lemon juice on the cotton wool then apply it to the skin.
  • Honey, it contains antioxidant properties, that can fade freckles over time. Apply a thin layer of it on the skin. Then after 5 to 10 minutes wash off with warm water.
  • Aloe vera it contains salicylic acid and aloin. This can also be helpful to disappear it.
  • Buttermilk contains lactic acid, which can lighten the freckles. It can be directly applied to the skin.
  • Yogurt also contains lactic acid. It is also helpful in removing freckles.
