 What is eye pain?

Eye pain is common in people. But it is a sign of a serious condition. Sometimes, it is treated without any medicine or without any treatment. It is also known as ophthalmalgia

Two types of eye pain occur in the eye. These are:

  • Ocular pain
  • Orbital pain

Ocular pain occurs on the eye surface and orbital pain occurs within the eye. The pain which occurs on the surface of aye can cause burning, scratching, and itching sensation. Pain on the eye surface is due to foreign objects like infection or trauma. This pain is easily treated with eye drops or take proper rest.

Eye pain that occurs deeper in the eye may feel aching, gritty, stabbing, or throbbing. If your eye pain is accompanied by vision loss, it may be a symptom of an emergency medical issue.

What are the causes of ocular pain?

There are the following causes of ocular pain.

Foreign object:

                            If you have something in your eye, this is the common cause of ocular pain. Such as your own eyelash, piece of dirt, or makeup. If you have any kind of thing from it, you may feel irritation, redness, watery eyes, and pain.

Conjunctivitis:

                         Conjunctiva is the tissue of the eye that presents the underside of the eyelid. It may become infected or inflamed. This is caused due to allergy or infection.

In this, pain is mild, and inflammation causes itchiness, redness, or discharge in the eye. It is also called pink eye.

Contact lens irritation:

                                         Those people who wear contact lenses overnight and do not disinfect them properly have more chances to adopt this pain.

Injury:

           This pain is caused by flash burns or chemical burns to the eye.

Blepharitis:

                    It occurs when oil glands on the eyelids become infected or inflamed. This is cause pain.

What are the causes of orbital pain?

There are the following main causes of orbital pain.

Glaucoma:

                   This appears as intraocular, pressure, or pressure inside the eye rises. Some symptoms are caused by glaucoma including nausea, headache, and loss of vision.

Sinusitis:

                This infection of the sinuses can cause pressure behind the eyes. It can cause pain in one or both eyes.

Migraines:

                  Migraine attacks also cause eye pain.


What’s your condition when you need immediate medical attention?

If you are experiencing these symptoms such as:

  • Severe eye pain
  • Eye pain caused by trauma
  • Abdominal pain and vomiting
  • Pain so severe it’s impossible to touch the eye
  • Sudden and dramatic vision changes

How is eye pain treated?

Treatment of eye pain depends on the cause of eye pain. These include:

When continuously staring at the computer screen or television can cause eye strain. Therefore, you need to take proper medical care for one day or more.

If you continuously wear contact lenses, give your eyes rest by wearing your glasses. you can also treat them by applying warm, or moist towels to your eyes. This also provides you relief.  It can also be treated by using antibiotics or eye drops.
